Eating Right and Learning
Every day I walk students down to the lunch room.  Usually, I quickly leave to work on lesson plans, but lately I have been staying to see what kids are eating.  I am shocked to see that kids pick up a milk and the main meal (pizza or pb sandwich, or chicken, etc) and they skip the salad bar!  If they do go to the salad bar, they pick up one baby carrot and maybe a slice of an orange. I also notice students never touch their milk!  A healthy diet is crucial to learning.  If your child is sluggish in the afternoon because they haven’t had a single piece of fruit or vegetables all day, it will hurt their learning. For those families that are fortunate to have the time to pack lunches for your child- don’t forget about those fruits and veggies!
Staying hydrated is just as important, especially in this dry climate.  Students ARE ALLOWED a water bottle that will not spill, in the classroom.
As adults, we all know how important a healthy diet is.  We are role models for our children. I am guilty!  So I am taking pledge to stop my habit of Sugar-Free Red Bull!  I also pledge to show students the healthy foods I am eating.  PLEASE talk with your children about eating right. I would love pictures of healthy meals you and your family have been eating at home.  Send them my way and I will post them on the blog! I will also take pics of students eating healthy lunches at school!  I posted links on the blog for advice about how to help kids eat healthy, please check them out!

We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Tuesday, February 12th, 2013.  We will spend our time doing a variety of fun math activities that incorporate the number 100.  One of the things we would like you and your child to do is a 100-day project.  This project can be anything you can think of that represents the number 100.  This does not need to cost anything.  You can use what you have around the house.  Some examples of projects from the past are; a heart poster with 100 heart candies glued inside or, an ocean scene poster with 100 ocean animal stickers on it, a shirt with 100 buttons glued or sewn on, a cake with 100 candles, or a poster with hand prints that equaled 100.  Be creative!
The projects are due on Friday, February 8thl, 2012.
We are also asking for some donations for the other projects we will be doing in class that day.  Please check off an item that you can donate from the list and send it in by Monday, February 6th.
We also would love to have help on this day.  If you can come in during your child’s math time to help let us know by signing below.
If you have any questions regarding this day, please let us know.  Our celebration will be from 1:30-2:45

Thank you

Thank you so much for everyone that has brought in donations for the 100th day of school(Feb 12th)! We still need heart candies, red hots, raisins, and chocolate chips.
I would like students to make an abacus, however, I am in need of shoe boxes!  We will also need shoe boxes for our Valentine’s Day cards that we will decorate in class!!  That’s a total of 54 shoe boxes!!!  If you have boxes, please send them in!!!  J
Here is a list of students for Valentine’s Day cards.  If you plan on sending cards, EACH student must receive one.  I also require that students write the names themselves (instead of parents writing it for them).  This is great handwriting practice!!  If you do not want to purchase Valentine’s Day cards you can have your child make them from scrap paper.  If you want to have your child bring candy for students, the same rule applies: Everyone must receive one!!!
If you do not want your child to participate in the Valentine’s Day activities, please let me know in advance and I will have something else prepared for them.

Dear Families,
During the month of February, I will be having a Shoelace Club.  Each Tuesday morning (7:45-8:05-Room 116) students will watch videos and read books teaching them to tie their shoes.  They will also practice tying their own shoes!  Typically, children can begin to learn to tie their shoes at age 3.  However, for most children they do not master this skill until the age of 6.  I am here to help!  If you would like your child to participate in this club, please fill out the bottom portion of this permission slip. The maximum number of students is 20.  The first 20 signed permission slips I receive will be selected to join this club.
Thank you,
Ms. Feinman
